Exploring Valle Furioso: A missed connection and a surprise

OUR PLAN… was to start on an old mining road and explore an overgrown horse trail that leads into the heart of Valle Furioso. We would spend the night deep in the valley and continue exploring for two more days. After spending 5 hours hiking on an old mining road with full packs, we knew we had missed the turn to go up valley because we were climbing high onto a ridge that continued out of Valle Furioso into the next valley over.

We decided to keep exploring… and follow the old mining road as far as it would take us. We ended up spending the next day climbing a beautiful mountain that overlooked Valle Furioso, the Jeinimeni range, and even Lago General Carrera in the distance!

This trip showed us that the seasons are definitely changing. We got rain, snow, and hail, and woke up with an iced-over tent. While we’re very happy that the days of unbearable heat are behind us, we’re definitely going to need to get our warmer clothes out from here forward.
